I have always wanted to fly on a 747,my options seem to be getting slimmer over time.

You can’t post a pic of a pan-am 747 and not include at least one picture of the swankiest lounge in the sky.

Yeah, you’d better hurry up. They won’t be around long.

Well-heeled passengers on the lower deck had a goddam piano bar. Those were the days, my friend.

They are still out there, but if you don’t hurry, the -400s will all be retired and you’ll basically be looking at Lufthansa, Korean Air, and Air China operating the 747-8i (and people think those will probably be converted to freighters before their useful life is out, much like the MD-11)

I haven’t been on one since I was 5 (well flown on one, I was the very first 747 in August, though sadly despite being a museum piece, they still don’t let you go up to the upper deck).

You and me both. I think that’s a fascinating picture. It either shows that the 707 wasn’t as big as it seemed, or that the 747 was bigger than it seemed, or both.

Speaking of 747s, I missed the chance to see AF1 last week. Trump came to town to speak, and I completely forgot about it. One of the flute players in the orchestra, along with her grandson, are big planespotters, and they parked at the south end of the runway outside the fence and had it land right over their heads. That would have been cool to see.

I think it’s both, but mostly the 747 is big . Btw are you sure that’s a 707? I sure as hell can’t distinguish it from a DC-8.

I used to see AF-1 every so often when Obama was president and I was working near O’Hare . It’s always an impressive sight.

Almost certain it’s a 707. It’s got the classic Boeing nose, and the DC-8 had air intakes in the bottom of the nose cone. The tail housing for the APU is also classic Boeing.

I believe you - those two aircraft are remarkably similar from a distance, despite different widths. And those stretched DC-8s are really long.

For the time being British Airways and Lufthansa are probably the easiest way to catch one from the US, both have quite a few US flights with the 747-400, and a couple 747-8 with Lufthansa, but those should be around for quite a long time.  I flew on a Lufthansa -400 this summer, and it really seemed like a novelty haha.

I flew Lufthansa overseas last year, but sadly no 747s involved.  I don't know when I will get another chance soon, I look for them whenever I am at major airports, but hardly ever see one anymore.
